General Singing Websites and Links

vocalist.org.uk - This large, lighthearted, yet informative UK singing website tries to think of everything and then gives a link to it.

uwm.edu/~nschild - Nancy Schild offers a breadth of useful links in her singing webliography. The list is old in Internet terms (November 2000) but then so is singing.

marybella.server101.com - Post a question to Mary Bella, Canadian soprano, and she will answer with her opinion and offer advice in her "Ask Mary" section. (Nice website too.)

Sheet Music and Compilations

When shopping for sheet music try to look for compilations with songs that interest you rather than buying individual sheet music. Over the long run it will cost less, expose you to more music and, unless you put the sheet music immediately into a binder, it will be far harder to lose.

<<Look for my recommended books for the beginning and intermediate vocal student here.>>

sheetmusicplus.com - Sheet Music Plus carries the full stock of Schirmer and Hal Leonard editions as well as a comprehensive catalog of vocal and instrumental sheet music:

Amazon.com - has a large selection of sheet music compilations and books on music theory & singing at prices typically lower than your local bookstore!

Search: Keywords:
In Association with Amazon.com

With Sheetmusicdirect.com you can purchase, download and immediately print sheet music from their website. byronhoyt.com also offers downloadable sheet music online with over 15000 songs available as printable sheet music for about 25¢ a page.

classicalvocalrep.com - Classical Vocal Repertoire specializes in out-of-print and hard to find sheet music. Also offers used music but that part was broken last time I visited them.

If that's not enough music stores, check out this link from Hal Leonard which lists all the on-line music stores that carry their books. If you own an Anthology book it was probably published by Hal Leonard. Joan Boytim publishes monthly articles on their site which center around repertoire selection.

Indiana University Library offers an online Opera Score prototype.

bestwebbuys.com This shopper-bot site scans 12 online stores, including Amazon, Books-a-Million and Barnes and Noble, for the best prices on new and used books. They also list the latest coupons codes. Other shopper-bot super sites include pricescan.com and mysimon.com and esmarts.com.

Repertoire Suggestions

<<Look for my recommended books for the beginning and intermediate vocal student here.>>

Karen Mercedes-Contralto suggests lists of repertoire for classical and legit singers.

opera.stanford.edu/misc/UnaVoce The OperaGlass site has gathered a list of operas which require six or fewer characters.

Both Joan Boytim and briangilbertson.com.au, mentioned above, have archives of articles relating to repertoire selection by age, voice type and the singers level of difficulty.

A collections of opera synopsis of works I have performed in are here.

Practice Tapes, CD's and MIDI's

Having a private accompanist can be an expensive proposition, especially when just learning a song, and singing along to a recording of an artist singing your part constrains your interpretation. To help out with this there are practice tapes and computer accompaniment that you can turn to.

CD's and tapes

musicminusone.com - Music minus one is the other big one of the CD accompaniment recordings.

classicalarchives.com - The Classical Music Archives has the largest collection of classical MIDI files on the Internet. Over 20,000 files!

hamienet.com - has a large selection of MIDI files in their Open Education Music Library.

broadwaymidi.com - has discontinued their Broadway shows but you can find some opera midis here.

recmusic.org/midi - Classical Midi with Words offers a collection of art songs you can use as your own digital karaoke.

Silvis Woodshed - G Silvis offers choral MIDI files consisting only of melody with no accompaniment.

Translations

recmusic.org/lieder the Lied and Songs Text Page offers text translations of art songs and other classical vocal pieces.
